Brighton Beach Bathing Boxes

Updated: Jan 1, 2021

📍Where in the world is Déja? 🌎✨ — Melbourne, Victoria, Australia 🇦🇺

My first ever solo trip was alllllllll the way across the world to Australia. I got my flight for $122 RT so I couldn’t pass up the opportunity of a lifetime!! While in Melbourne, I did a bunch of cool things — one of which was visiting the infamous Brighton Bathing Boxes at Brighton Beach. Before the Great Depression, there were as many as 200 bathing boxes stretching across the shoreline outside of Melbourne. Today, there are 82 very colorful bathing boxes (swipe left to see them on the shoreline) that were built in the early 1900s; while their hand painted designs make them easily recognizable around the world, their authentic early-20th century architecture makes them worth marveling over. The boxes were originally created to give women privacy while changing on the beach. Today owners use them to house towels, coolers, beach tables/chairs, and shade them from the sun. Don’t let their small size fool you either... buying one today can cost as much as $340,000 (& they don’t have running water or electricity)!!! — Would you want to own one of these boxes?
